The skincare that worked at 22 might not help you at 38. Your skin changes with age, and so should your skincare. As you move through different decades of life, your skin faces new challenges, like dryness, dullness, or fine lines. Learning how to adapt your routine early can help you maintain healthy, balanced skin for the long term without chasing the latest trends or products that don’t suit your needs.
Your skin has different priorities at different ages. In your 20s, it’s about prevention. In your 30s, you start to see signs of ageing. By your 40s and 50s, maintaining hydration, firmness, and skin texture becomes key, says Dr Niketa Sonavane, Celebrity Dermatologist and Founder of Ambrosia Aesthetics, Mumbai. “Building a solid foundation early makes it easier to manage skin changes later. Using products based on your age group, not just skin type, can prevent early damage and boost long-term skin health," she says.

- Start with the basics in your 20s:
Your skin is at its healthiest in your 20s. It is the time to focus on maintaining it. Stick to a gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturiser, and sunscreen every day. "SPF is non-negotiable," says Dr Sonavane. You can also introduce an antioxidant serum, like vitamin C, to help protect against environmental damage. Keep your routine simple and consistent.
- Target early signs of ageing in your 30s:
In your 30s, you may start noticing fine lines or uneven skin tone. As collagen production slows, consider incorporating ingredients like retinol and stronger antioxidants into your routine. A richer moisturiser can also help keep your skin hydrated. Dr Sonavane suggests considering skin treatments that promote hydration and elasticity while maintaining your natural appearance.

- Boost moisture and firmness in your 40s:
As skin becomes drier and loses some of its bounce, you might want to switch to a creamier cleanser and thicker moisturisers. Ingredients like ceramides can help lock in moisture, while peptides and retinoids may support collagen production. Don’t forget to pay attention to areas like the neck, under-eyes, and hands, as these areas often show signs of aging earlier than the face.
- Focus on repair and resilience after your 50s:
Menopause often brings changes like increased dryness and sensitivity. Look for hydrating oils, gentle alternatives to retinol, and products designed to support the skin’s natural barrier. Regular professional care, along with the right skincare products, can improve skin comfort, firmness, and your appearance.
