Do you ever change your skincare routine, or stick to the same all round the year? Change in seasons is synonymous with change in clothes. You choose cottons in summer, layers in winter. Similarly, the shift in weather from sticky and humid to dry and chilly is time to make the required skincare changes to avoid skin issues like pimples, flaky patches, redness or dullness.

Your skin shows subtle signs to suggest your skincare routine needs a little seasonal update. “Many people come with breakouts during humid months and dry, sensitive skin during winter,” says Dr Geeta Grewal, Cosmetologist and Founder of 9Muses Wellness Clinic. “It’s not about expensive creams. It is about using the right kind of care for the climate,” she suggests.

When the air is humid, your skin sweats more and produces extra oil. This clogs your pores and causes pimples or fungal infections. In contrast, when the weather becomes dry, the air pulls out the moisture from your skin, making it rough, itchy, or even red and sensitive. “Your skin is always trying to protect you. But if you don’t support it with the right products, it struggles,” warns Dr Ameesha Mahajan, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Founder of Eden Skin Clinic.

Best skincare tips for different weather conditions:

  • Change your cleanser:Cleansingis an important step. “In humid weather, your skin produces more oil and sweat, which can clog pore. A lightweight, gel-based face wash helps keep things in balance. When it gets dry outside, switch to a creamy cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin’s natural oils,” says Dr Grewal.

  • Choose moisturiser wisely: “On sticky, humid days, go for a light, non-greasy moisturiser that won’t block your pores. But when the air turns cold and dry, your skin needs extra help, use richer creams with ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid to keep it soft and hydrated,” Dr Mahajan says.

  • Adjust your sunscreen: According to Dr Grewal, sunscreen is a must in any weather, but she insists on choosing the right type. “In humid conditions, use a gel-based formula that doesn’t feel heavy. In dry weather, go for a creamier sunscreen that also adds some moisture,” she adds.

  • Exfoliate with care: In sweaty, humid weather, exfoliating once or twice a week with a product containing salicylic acid can stop breakouts, suggests Dr Mahajan. “But be careful not to over-exfoliate, especially when the weather is dry, your skin might get irritated or even more flaky.”

  • Hydrate inside out: No matter the weather, hydration is vital. Dr. Mahajan advises, “Drink enough water, around 8–10 glasses a day, and eat foods rich in antioxidants and healthy fats like nuts and seeds. Also, avoid very hot showers, they strip away your skin’s natural moisture.”

  • Support with lifestyle: Add things like almonds and walnuts to your meals for omega-3s. “In colder months, consider using a few drops of facial oil at night to lock in moisture. If indoor heating is drying out your skin, a humidifier can really help.” Dr Grewal says.
