Do you often feel frustrated managing PCOS symptoms like irregular periods, weight fluctuations, or skin concerns? While conventional medicine is essential, many women explore natural ways to support their healing. Traditional Indian herbs are known for their potential to balance hormones, reduce inflammation, and manage stress, the key factors in PCOS.

When used with care, ayurvedic herbs can complement modern treatments and offer relief in PCOS by targeting stress, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances, says Dietitian Vidhi Chawla, founder of Fisico Diet and Aesthetic Clinic. “You use herbs like ashwagandha or turmeric based on one’s needs. These herbs can complement dietary and lifestyle changes by helping reduce stress and inflammation, two key contributors to PCOS symptoms.” says Chawla.

Instead of replacing medical treatment, these herbs act as complementary tools. “Their benefits are not only physical but also mental. Many adaptogens work to calm the nervous system, which is often overstimulated in women with PCOS. With proper guidance, these herbs can improve metabolic and hormonal health while supporting emotional well-being,” she adds.

Different herbs target different aspects of PCOS, explains Chawla. “Some work by improving insulin sensitivity, while others support hormonal balance or reproductive health. The goal is to use these herbs mindfully, as part of a larger plan that includes nutrition, exercise, stress management, and medical care when needed,” she cautions.

However, the dietician suggests that while research on these herbs is growing, their use must be personalised and monitored, especially when combined with allopathic treatments. “Self-treatment can be risky, professional guidance ensures safety and effectiveness,” she warns.

Here are a few herbs, recommended by Chawla, that promise relief from common PCOS symptoms:

  • Ashwagandha for stress and hormonal balance: An adaptogen that helps lower cortisol levels, ashwagandha may support hormonal regulation and improve stress resilience in women with PCOS.

  • Shatavari to support reproductive health: Known for boosting female fertility, shatavari may help regulate menstrual cycles, balance hormones, and reduce inflammation.

  • Turmeric to fight inflammation: With its active compound curcumin, turmeric may reduce systemic inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity, both key in PCOS management.

  • Cinnamon for insulin regulation: Regular use of cinnamon has shown promise in improving blood sugar control and menstrual cycle regularity.
