Shilajit is a dietary supplement known for boosting energy and supporting health. Research suggests it may aid cognitive function and ageing-related disorders, particularly due to fulvic acid, its key active compound, which may help prevent harmful protein buildup linked to Alzheimer’s. Additionally, it may boost male reproductive health by improving testosterone levels and fertility.
For men, introducing Shilajit into their daily routine can have a positive impact on reproductive health and fitness, says Dr Shruthi M Hegde, Ayurveda expert, Discovery Sciences Group, Research & Development Center, Himalaya Wellness Company, Bengaluru. “Shilajit has been known in Ayurveda for its rejuvenating properties. Its bioactive compounds, including fulvic acid, contribute to improved stamina, hormonal balance, and reproductive function in men," she says.

Supports healthy testosterone levels: Testosterone plays a vital role in male reproductive health, influencing sperm production, muscle strength, and overall vitality. “Shilajit is known to help maintain healthy testosterone levels, thanks to its rich content of fulvic acid and other bioactive compounds. Research suggests that regular supplementation with Shilajit can naturally support testosterone production, which is vital for maintaining energy levels, libido, and fertility in men," says Dr Hegde.
Promotes reproductive health: Studies have shown that Shilajit supplementation can improve sperm count while reducing oxidative stress. By combating cellular damage, it supports reproductive function and improves fertility in men. “Shilajit’s antioxidant and adaptogenic properties help reduce stress at a cellular level, which is crucial for sperm health. Oxidative stress can negatively impact sperm motility and count, so incorporating antioxidants like Shilajit can be beneficial," suggests Dr Hegde.

Improves sexual wellness: For centuries, Ayurvedic practitioners have classified Shilajit as Vrishya, a term referring to aphrodisiacs. Traditionally, it has been used to treat infertility and other male sexual health concerns, making it a trusted natural remedy in holistic medicine. “Shilajit has long been recognised in Ayurveda for its ability to enhance stamina, vigor, and overall sexual wellness. It helps improve blood circulation and supports a healthy libido, which can positively influence reproductive health," explains Dr Hegde
Provides antioxidant protection: Shilajit is rich in fulvic acid, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect reproductive health from oxidative damage. Since oxidative stress can negatively impact sperm quality, the antioxidant properties of Shilajit play a crucial role in preserving sperm health and count. “The fulvic acid in Shilajit acts as a potent antioxidant, shielding sperm cells from oxidative damage. This not only improves sperm quality but also supports reproductive health," Dr Hegde explains.
Supports reproductive well-being: Beyond fertility, Shilajit contains essential minerals and bioactive compounds that contribute to overall reproductive wellness. It helps balance hormone levels, reduces stress, and supports the proper functioning of the reproductive system. “A well-balanced reproductive system is not just about fertility, it’s about well-being. Shilajit’s adaptogenic and nutritional properties help regulate stress hormones, enhance endurance," Dr Hegde concludes.
