Why you should apply mustard oil to the belly button during winters

For many households, mustard oil remains the most trusted winter companion because of its warming nature. Its pungency, depth, and heat-supporting qualities help the body cope with dropping temperatures.

Ancient Ayurvedic practices often come back into conversation during the winter months, especially the rituals that focus on warmth, digestion, and grounding the body. One such age-old habit is applying oil to the belly button at night with soothing, and surprisingly effects.

Ayurveda places special importance on the navel, or nābhi, viewing it not just as an anatomical point but as a powerful physiological and energetic hub. It is the body’s original lifeline, the same spot where the fetus once received nourishment from the mother. This makes the navel a vital marma point connected to digestion, circulation, and the nervous system. When gently massaged with warm oil, the area is believed to activate the body’s “digestive fire” (Agni), support healthy blood and nerve flow, and balance vata and pitta -- two doshas that often get disturbed during colder months.

The ritual brings attention back to the center of the body, helping the system feel calmer and more aligned during winter’s harshness. Swati Sutaria Vakharia, Founder of Nabhi Sutra, explains this seasonal need clearly: “Applying mustard oil to the belly button in winter helps keep the body warm and balanced. Mustard oil has natural heating properties that stimulate circulation, support digestion, and relieve issues like bloating or constipation, which are common in cold weather. It also helps pacify vata dosha, which increases during winter, causing dryness and stiffness. The oil nourishes the skin and prevents dryness from within. To use, warm a few drops of pure mustard oil, apply 2–3 drops to the navel at night, and massage gently in a clockwise motion for better absorption and warmth. It helps to reduce dryness in the eyes as well by nourishing the body against dryness.”

Benefits of navel oiling:

Sometimes, the simplest traditions offer the most grounding benefits, and navel oiling is one of them. Along with mustard, Ayurveda also suggests other oils depending on individual needs. Experts recommend coconut, ginger, and castor oils each with its own properties.

Vakharia highlights the common benefits, “Coconut oil has cooling, soothing properties that support digestion and relieve acidity. Ginger oil that can boost digestion and helps to reduce internal inflammation and castor oil is known for its detoxifying qualities and may relieve constipation. To use, cleanse the navel area gently to remove any lint or debris. Before bedtime, apply two to three drops of your chosen oil into or around the navel and massage it in a gentle clockwise motion for one to two minutes. Leave it overnight and clean the area in the morning. Consistent use for about 21 days is often recommended to observe benefits. Choose the oil based on your body type and skin sensitivity, avoiding application over broken or irritated skin.”

Keeping the navel nourished helps maintain smooth circulation and energy flow throughout the abdominal region. When practiced regularly, this small act supports digestion, reduces mild bloating, and helps the system eliminate waste more efficiently. A simple morning cleanse and a nightly application are enough to make it part of your routine.
