Dharmendra is back home in Juhu after being discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, and fans across the country are relieved to see him resting with family. Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol have been by his side throughout, visiting the hospital through the week and now spending time at home while their father slowly regains strength.
But behind this emotional moment, an old interview of the legendary star has resurfaced, one where Dharmendra admitted that even though his sons love and respect him deeply, he wishes they were more comfortable simply sitting with him and talking like friends.
In a conversation on Asian Paints’ YouTube channel, he revealed that the respect between them has sometimes created distance. Dharmendra said, “Sunny, Bobby are scared of me, and I want them to sit with me, talk to me. Today, I feel that if my father had been my friend, it would have been so nice. We really miss certain things; friendship is very important. I miss them. They don’t sit with me at all. They come and say, ‘Papa, I’m going for a shoot,’ and leave."
The actor shared that this longing reminded him of his own bond with his father. He recalled, “I used to see my father sitting on a chair, talking to the watchman, resting his head on his hand, always thinking about something. So I would ask, ‘Babuji, what happened? Do you need something? Tell me, I’ll bring it.’ He would say, ‘No son, I have servants, a house, everything. What do I need? Just come home early from your shoots, sit with me for a while.’"
Later, Dharmendra said that his mother told him she wanted the same from him — not gifts, not favours, just presence.
Bobby Deol recently reflected on this emotional shift in a chat with Humans of Bombay, talking about how family dynamics change as parents grow older. “When you’re growing up, you get confused between respect and being scared. But it wasn’t being scared, it was respect… They’ve become older, so vulnerable. You have to look after them. Things change, that’s the circle of life."
