UPI Lite X

UPI Lite X allows users to make digital payments without needing an active internet connection. Built on NFC technology, it processes payments through an on-device wallet rather than a live bank request. This makes it especially useful in low-network zones, during travel, or whenever users need quick, small-value payments. Here’s how you can set it up and important things to keep in mind.

How to set up UPI Lite X

Step 1. Install a supported app
Download a UPI Lite X-compatible app such as BHIM or a participating bank’s UPI app. Ensure your smartphone has NFC support.

Step 2. Register your bank account
Open the app, link your UPI-enabled bank account and confirm your UPI PIN to activate payments.

Step 3. Enable UPI Lite X
Go to settings, tap on “UPI Lite X” or “Tap & Pay,” accept the terms and turn on the feature.

Step 4. Load the offline wallet
Add money to your UPI Lite X on-device wallet (up to Rs 2,000).

Step 5. Make offline payments
Select “Tap & Pay,” enter the amount and tap your phone on an NFC-enabled terminal or soundbox to pay.

Things to know
• Works without mobile data or Wi-Fi
• Maximum Rs 500 per transaction
• Wallet balance capped at Rs 2,000
• Payments do not require entering UPI PIN
• Requires NFC on both devices
• Optimised for low battery usage

Limitations

While UPI Lite X is convenient for offline use, there are several constraints you should consider:
• Not for high-value payments: With a cap of Rs 500 per transaction, it cannot replace regular UPI for larger purchases or bill payments.
• Limited wallet capacity: The Rs 2,000 storage limit means frequent top-ups are necessary for regular users.
• NFC dependency: If your smartphone or the merchant’s terminal doesn’t support NFC, UPI Lite X won’t work.
• Device-specific wallet: The money stays on your phone. Changing devices or resetting the phone requires re-setup and may involve balance recovery steps through your bank.
• Not universal across apps yet: Only select apps support UPI Lite X, so some users may need to switch apps.
• No PIN entry: While convenient, this may feel less secure for some users, especially if the phone is unlocked or shared.
