Gut health isn’t just about better digestion and tummy care. Grandma used to say most health issues emerge from an unhealthy gut. Multiple studies also suggest that gut may be your body’s secret weapon in the fight against various disease, including cancer.

We should always pay close attention to our gut health, not just for comfort, but for protection as well, says Dr Jyoti Mehta, Consultant Radiation Oncologist, Onco-Life Cancer Centre, Talegaon. “Your digestive system helps to  process food and it also plays a pivotal role in boosting immunity, hormone balance, detoxification, all of which are linked to cancer prevention,” she adds.

Dr Mehta shares 8 reasons why nurturing your gut could help lower your cancer risk:

  • Good bacteria guard you

A well-balanced gut microbiome, that mix of ‘good’ bacteria in your intestines, works around the clock to eliminate cancer-causing toxins before they can do harm. It’s your body’s built-in clean-up crew, and it deserves care.

  • Inflammation stays in check

Chronic inflammation is increasingly linked to various cancers. A healthy gut helps regulate your body’s immune response, preventing inflammation from getting out of hand.
  • Immunity gets a boost

Did you know that nearly 70 percent of your immune cells live in your gut? A strong digestive system equips your body to spot and destroy abnormal cells early.
  • Nutrients get absorbed properly

Your gut is responsible for absorbing cancer-fighting vitamins like A, D, E, and K. If your gut isn’t healthy, your nutrient intake might not be either, no matter how many supplements you take.
  • Hormones stay balanced

Gut bacteria also help process and eliminate excess hormones such as oestrogen, which, if left unchecked, can raise the risk of certain cancers.

  • Detoxification is efficient

A clean gut works in tandem with the liver and kidneys to flush out harmful waste. When your gut is sluggish, toxins can accumulate.
  • Weight remains in control

Obesity is closely tied to a number of cancers. A well-functioning gut supports metabolism and weight management, helping you stay in a healthy range.
  • Mental stress is reduced

There’s a growing link between stress, gut health, and immunity. A calmer gut can help you manage stress more effectively, protecting both body and mind.

How to support your gut health

Dr Mehta recommends a gut-friendly lifestyle. “Eat plenty of fibre, include fermented foods like curd or kefir, stay adequately hydrated, cut down on processed foods, and keep stress levels in check,” she says.

Foods like leafy greens, oats, whole grains, avocados, yoghurt, and kimchi are excellent choices. “Add a daily probiotic if necessary, and don’t forget to move your body, even a short daily walk supports gut motility,” the expert adds.
