After fasting for a day or more, it’s tempting to dive straight into a feast, but it’s essential to break your fast gently to promote gut health and avoid digestive discomfort. Fasting, whether for religious or health reasons, offers numerous benefits, such as giving your digestive system a break, reducing inflammation, and promoting gut cleansing.

Fasting, when done correctly, can have tremendous impact on your digestive health and gut cleansing, says Dr Mallika Motta, Consulting Homeopath at The Vital Dose Homeopathy. “The key is in how you break your fast. Introducing nutrient-dense and gut-friendly foods can make all the difference. As you emerge from the fast, it's essential to focus on foods that are easy to digest and beneficial for your gut,” she adds.

Whether you’ve fasted for one day during Karwa Chauth, one week for Paryushan, nine days for Navratri, or even a month for Ramadan, Dr Motta suggests eight foods that can help promote gut health and ease the transition back to regular eating:

  • Fruits: Break your fast with fruits like bananas, apples, pears, berries, and avocados. Their high fiber content, nutrients, and minerals support digestion and provide a gentle introduction to more solid foods.

  • Fermented foods: Foods like yoghurt, freshly made sauerkraut, idli, and dosas are excellent for improving gut flora. The natural probiotics in these foods promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is crucial after a fast.

  • Beverages: Hydration is essential when breaking a fast. Replenish lost electrolytes and rehydrated water, fresh lime juice, coconut water, sattu, or buttermilk. These drinks offer an instant energy boost and help recalibrate your body’s fluid balance.

  • Fibre-rich foods: Beyond fruits, fibre-rich foods like moong dal, chickpeas, masoor dal, oats, curd rice, and broccoli are great for gut health. These foods help with colon cleansing and support smooth digestion.

  • Smoothies and vegetable broth: Blending fruits with leafy greens, or making a vegetable broth with ingredients like dates or figs, aids digestion and helps your body absorb essential nutrients. These liquid-based foods prepare your gut for heavier meals.

  • Healthy fats: Introduce healthy fats slowly with small portions of nuts and seeds like almonds, chia seeds, or flaxseeds. These provide essential fats without overloading your digestive system.

  • Light protein: Foods like plain Greek yoghurt, beans, or one or two eggs are a great way to reintroduce protein into your diet. These light sources of protein provide the amino acids your body needs for recovery without being hard to digest.
