Sonam Kapoor celebrates 15 years of Aisha

It’s been 15 years since Aisha first hit cinema screens, and the film continues to hold a special place in the hearts of moviegoers — particularly those with a passion for fashion.

Released on 6 August 2010, Aisha wasn’t just a light-hearted rom-com; it redefined fashion in Indian cinema and paved the way for style to take centre stage. The film marked the production debut of Rhea Kapoor and was helmed by director Rajshree Ojha.

Featuring a fresh and dynamic cast led by Sonam Kapoor, alongside Amrita Puri and Ira Dubey, Aisha slowly evolved into a cult classic among young audiences and fashion-forward viewers.

Reflecting on the film’s anniversary, Sonam Kapoor opened up about its cultural and cinematic legacy. She noted that Aisha went beyond the confines of a traditional Bollywood film, offering something modern and relatable for its time.

“While making Aisha, we never set out with the intent to make any cultural impact... People felt that and made us recognise this when they saw the film as they found it was a generation defining film for youngsters then,” she shared.

Sonam explained how fashion was deliberately pushed to the forefront in the film. “During the making of the film, we always knew that we wanted it to play with fashion and make it cool yet accessible to people... We were unaware what Aisha would do in cinema and how it would impact pop culture and the psyche of the youth of the country and also South Asians worldwide."

She also highlighted how Aisha marked a turning point for fashion in Bollywood. “For the first time in Bollywood, fashion wasn’t just a background element but it was in front and centre and sparked mainstream conversations about style and self-expression through what we wear.”

For Sonam, Aisha remains deeply personal. “That’s why I think till date, Aisha holds a very special place in my heart… And that’s what perhaps made her timeless and live on in pop culture, wardrobes and hearts even fifteen years later and that is the greatest gift for all of us today.”
