Jim Sarbh clarified on Saturday that his previous remarks regarding actors and their dramatic processes were not aimed at his Padmaavat co-star, Ranveer Singh. This clarification came after actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was questioned about those remarks in a recent interview. Alongside Jim, actor Prashant Narayanan had also appeared to mock Ranveer Singh's approach, particularly his claim of immersing deeply into character for his role as Allaudin Khilji in Padmaavat.
Ranveer Singh had famously detailed how he secluded himself in his Goregaon residence to prepare for the role, expressing concerns about emerging from the intense emotional space he inhabited. Both Jim and Prashant had scoffed at such sentiments. In an interview with The Quint, Jim had remarked, “There are all those actors who are like ‘You know, I was so stuck in my character that I had to get mental therapy for weeks after.’ I was like, ‘Shut up bro. You didn’t even know your lines on the day, what nonsense.’”
Jim Sarbh posted his clarification on his Instagram. The actor wrote, “I find this almost absurd to have to clarify, but since folks are running wild with the videos and the articles: Nothing I said refers to Ranveer Singh. The video byte being shared is from made in heaven season 2 promotions, 5 whole years since Padmaavat came out. 5 years. I only had lovely things to say about Ranveer as a co actor- look it up. I still do. Also: it is not an attack on process. I love process, and I love actors.”
Sarbh stressed that the comment was about actors who made mighty claims but never delivered, “The video is making fun of actors who exaggerate their process. I’m sure you’ve all met people who talk about their work more than do their work. Can’t wait for the next article or video shooting off my shoulder…. I usually don’t respond to speculative videos and articles, because they’re boring and I assume people know better. Of course, just like some of you, I assumed wrong. Too many people have forwarded me things, and now journalists/interviewers are ‘identifying’ me as a ‘critic’, despite me never having mentioned anyone at all, let alone @ranveersingh.”
Prashant Narayanan had commented on Ranveer Singh’s process, “Woh jhoot bol raha hai. Yeh dark spaces mein jana, yeh sab karna yeh bakwas ki baatein hai.”
Recently, renowned actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui came to Ranveer Singh’s defence and clapped back at Prashant’s comments, “The people who are calling it fake, did they bother to understand the actor’s process? Did they bother to understand how he was living his life when he was creating the character? They are simply judging him. We don’t know what a man is thinking when he’s coming up with a characterisation. They think it is pretentious. When you dive deep into a character, it is a very painful process. This is a very irresponsible thing to say.”
