Mel Gibson, the famous actor, has lost his childhood home in Malibu to the wildfires that swept through the Los Angeles area. The fire destroyed his property while he was in Austin, Texas, recording a podcast with Joe Rogan. He did not know about the fire at the time. Gibson shared his feelings during an interview, saying that he was uneasy while talking to Rogan because he knew his neighborhood was burning. He wondered if his home would survive. But when he returned to Malibu, he found that it was gone.
The wildfires left behind very little of the property. All that was left were a few pieces of stone walls, some chimneys, and piles of burned debris, as reported by The Daily Beast. Gibson had lived in this Malibu house for over 14 years, and losing it felt very emotional for him. He said, “It’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional. I’ve never come across a place so perfectly burnt—it’s completely toasted.”
The wildfires affected a large area, burning 25 miles of land just north of downtown Los Angeles. The fires were incredibly destructive, causing the deaths of seven people and destroying more than 10,000 buildings. Gibson compared the destruction of his home to the devastation caused by the bombing of Dresden, Germany, during World War II, calling it “completely toasted.”
Despite the tragic loss of his home, Gibson was thankful that his family was safe. He said, "These are only things, and the good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well and happy." In a surprising turn, even the family’s chickens, which were locked in a coop during the fire, were unharmed. This brought some comfort to Gibson amidst the chaos.
The fires, which began on a Tuesday, caused huge damage in Los Angeles. Thousands of people had to leave their homes as the flames spread quickly. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, and the fires disrupted Hollywood as well. Several television shows had to stop production, and many red-carpet events and award ceremonies were either postponed or canceled because of the ongoing fires.
For Gibson, the loss of his home is deeply painful, but his focus remains on the well-being of his family. He is now looking ahead and starting the process of rebuilding his life. Although losing a home is never easy, he is thankful that everyone he loves is safe and unharmed. His story reminds us of the importance of family and the strength that can come from moving forward after tragedy.
