Delhi High court rejects petition against Yo Yo Honey Singh Maniac lyrics

On Wednesday, March 26, the Delhi High Court dismissed a petition seeking to compel singer and rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh to modify the lyrics of his latest song, Maniac.

The petition, filed by Luv Kush Kumar, argued that the song contained Bhojpuri lyrics that objectified women and promoted vulgarity. However, the court rejected the plea, emphasising that "vulgarity doesn't have any religion," pointing out that the issue of vulgarity transcends language and cultural boundaries.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, made these remarks while hearing the petition, which claimed that Maniac portrayed women in a sexualized manner, using Bhojpuri language to promote vulgarity.

Kumar's counsel argued that the song's lyrics included double entendres and crude language, objectifying women and fostering a culture of disrespect and sexism. The petition gained traction due to the song’s controversial content, which had garnered considerable attention for its explicit nature.

The bench responded by stating, “Vulgarity doesn’t have any religion. It should be unqualified. Never ever say Bhojpuri vulgarity. What is this? Vulgar is vulgar. Obscene is obscene.” The court also pointed out that the petition was not maintainable in public law, as it was directed at a private individual. The bench clarified that writ petitions are typically filed against the state or state bodies, not private entities.

Advising Kumar on alternative legal remedies, the court suggested that he pursue a criminal case if the content constituted a cognizable offence. Kumar was informed that he could lodge an FIR if necessary. After considering this advice, he decided to withdraw his plea.

The petition had also been supported by actress Neetu Chandra, who had urged the Patna High Court to intervene and modify the song’s lyrics. She named Yo Yo Honey Singh, Leo Grewal, Ragini Vishwakarma, T-Series, Google, and YouTube as respondents in her plea.
