Each day of Navratri is devoted to one form of Goddess Durga, and Chaturthi is dedicated to Maa Kushmanda, also known as Ashtabhuja Devi for her eight hands. Maa Kushmanda rides a lioness and holds a lotus, bow, arrow, and kamandal in her right hands, while in her left hands she carries a chakra, gada, japa mala, and an amrit kalash. She rules over the Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra) and is believed to remove depression, fear, and negative thoughts from devotees’ lives.
