Utpanna Ekadashi holds great importance in the Hindu calendar as it marks the origin of Ekadashi fasting. According to sacred Hindu scriptures, this Ekadashi falls on the Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month (right after Kartik Purnima) and comes immediately after Devutthana Ekadashi. Utpanna Ekadashi will be observed on Saturday, November 15, 2025. The Parana time (ritual for breaking the fast) will be on Sunday, November 16, 2025, between 1:10 PM and 3:18 PM.
Importance of Parana (Breaking the Fast)
The ritual of Parana means breaking the Ekadashi fast and must be done after sunrise on Dwadashi Tithi, the day following Ekadashi. Performing Parana within the proper time is considered auspicious, while delaying it beyond Dwadashi is discouraged.
Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi. Devotees usually wait for this period to end before breaking the fast. The ideal time to perform Parana is in the morning (Pratahkal). However, if one cannot do it then, it may be performed after the Madhyahna (afternoon) period.
Significance of Utpanna Ekadashi
This Ekadashi is dedicated to Goddess Ekadashi, who is believed to be a divine power (Shakti) of Lord Vishnu. As per the legend, Goddess Ekadashi emerged from Lord Vishnu to destroy the demon Mur, who tried to attack Lord Vishnu while He was resting. From that day, devotees began observing fasts on Ekadashi to honor her divine energy and seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings.
Utpanna Ekadashi is therefore considered the birth anniversary of Goddess Ekadashi, symbolizing victory of divine energy over evil. Devotees who wish to take a yearly vow of observing all Ekadashi fasts generally begin from this day.
Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat: Rituals and Puja Vidhi
Devotees wake up early, take a holy bath, and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Ekadashi. The fast is observed with full devotion, refraining from consuming grains, pulses, and certain spices. Many devotees spend the day chanting Vishnu mantras, reading the Vishnu Sahasranama, and engaging in meditation and prayer.
It is believed that observing this fast with faith helps one overcome fear, removes negativity, and brings spiritual awakening.
Spiritual Significance
Observing Utpanna Ekadashi helps devotees purify their mind and soul, bringing them closer to Lord Vishnu. The vrat is believed to free one from past sins, remove obstacles, and help attain spiritual peace and moksha (liberation).
As the legend teaches, true devotion and discipline have the power to destroy negativity, both within and around us, just as Goddess Ekadashi destroyed the demon Mur.
