Celebrated with devotion across India, the Krichchhra Chaturthi Vrat follows a detailed four-year observance that concludes with a special Udyapana ceremony, making this vrat highly powerful for spiritual growth, prosperity and accomplishment.

Krichchhra Chaturthi is observed on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of Margashirsha month. As mentioned in the Skanda Purana, this vrat must be observed continuously for four years, beginning on Krichchhra Chaturthi and ending with a formal Udyapana. Devotees worship Lord Ganesha with deep devotion, believing that this observance removes all obstacles and ensures success in every area of life.

Four-Year Observance: How the Vrat is Performed?

The Krichchhra Chaturthi Vrat follows a disciplined pattern each year:

• Year 1: Devotees eat only once during the day on each Chaturthi.
• Year 2: One meal is taken only at night.
• Year 3: The vrat is observed by consuming Ayachita Anna, which means unsolicited food.
• Year 4: A complete fast is observed, with the day dedicated to the chanting and remembrance of Lord Ganesha.

Krichchhra Chaturthi Puja Vidhi

The puja is performed with devotion, following traditional steps. While customs may vary slightly across regions, the core rituals remain consistent. Step-by-step Puja Procedure:

• Take a bath early morning and wear clean clothes.
• Take a Sankalpa to observe the vrat with sincerity.
• Spread a red cloth on a wooden seat and place an idol or photo of Lord Ganesha.
• Perform Shodashopachara Puja including Avahana, Asana, Arghya, Snana, Vastra, Gandha, Pushpa, Dhupa, Dipa and Naivedya.
• Offer red flowers, vermilion, Durva grass, pure ghee, Modak and Laddus.
• Recite or listen to the Krichchhra Chaturthi Vrat Katha in the evening.
• As per the Mudgala Purana, break the fast (Parana) on Panchami Tithi in the presence of a Brahmin.

The Udyapana is an important completion ritual. It may involve a gold idol of Lord Ganesha, or one made from turmeric powder if gold is not feasible. Steps for Udyapana:

• Draw a lotus design using rangoli powders and perform Kalash Sthapana.
• Place a pot filled with rice over the Kalash and cover it with cloth; install the Ganesha idol on top.
• Perform Shodashopachara Puja with incense, lamp, Naivedya, fruits, flowers and prayers.
• Offer Modak and Laddus and keep vigil while chanting hymns.

• Arrange a Havan under the guidance of an Acharya.
• Offer Ahutis using sesame, barley, rice, ghee, sugar and mustard seeds while chanting sixteen divine names of Lord Ganesha including Om Ganadhipaya Namah, Om Ekadantaya Namah, Om Varunaya Namah, Om Suryaya Namah, and others.
• Worship the Dikpalas, serve Kheer and Laddus to 24 Brahmins, and donate as per capacity.
• Partake in the sacred food with family to complete the observance.
