Bengaluru's long-delayed Ejipura flyover has been meme fodder - from being called the tech capital's Stonehenge, to jokes suggesting that Trump or Sam Altman should intervene, to unused pillars being repurposed as lamp posts.
The flyover even has a dedicated X handle: @Ejipuraflyover.
In an interview with Moneycontrol, Greater Bengaluru Authority chief commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said: "I have seen some of the memes, and I must say they are quite innovative (laughs). In a lighter vein, anyway, RCB has won the IPL, and next year (July 2026) the Ejipura flyover will also be completed. The contractor is in place, and we are hopeful he finishes the work quickly."

On the reasons for the delay, Rao, who took charge as civic chief in April 2025, said: "These projects face challenges when the company handling the work goes bust. Even though the contractor is selected after rigorous criteria, market conditions can affect their execution."

Asked why Bengaluru Metro managed to terminate the same contractor without major delays, he explained: "Bengaluru Metro faced similar issues, but decision-making there is faster. In the corporation, it takes longer. We had to re-tender three to four times before finally appointing a contractor, so work could only start very recently."

The flyover, 2.4 km long from Kendriya Sadan to Ejipura Main Road, was awarded to Simplex Infrastructures for Rs 203 crore in May 2017. Despite completion deadlines set for November 2019 and December 2020, the project stalled due to Simplex’s financial issues. BBMP terminated Simplex’s contract in March 2022. After three unsuccessful re-tender attempts, BSCPL Infrastructure Ltd was awarded the project and resumed construction in November 2023.
