Dyson Omni-glide vacuum cleaner review: Perfect tool for your Diwali cleaning?

After using the vacuum cleaner for a few days to clean my home and clear all your queries, here is our Dyson Omni-glide review.

Indians generally love to keep their houses clean. For a country where most parts are dusty and filled with pollutants in the air, it becomes more like a routine chore to get the mop and vacuum cleaner out. However, millennials and gen-z people like me want to get things done quickly without doing a lot of heavy lifting. This is where the Dyson Omni-glide vacuum cleaner comes in handy.

Dyson sent their new vacuum cleaner ahead of the festive season, making it right in time for testing its capabilities. I am not someone who likes cleaning but this handy, powerful vacuum cleaner got me interested. However, the Omni-glide, like many other Dyson vacuum cleaners and products, comes with a steep price tag. In case you are on the lookout for a vacuum cleaner, should you opt for this one? After using the product for a few days to clean my home and clear your queries, here is our Dyson Omni-glide review.

Dyson Omni-glide review

With vacuum cleaners, we tend to ensure that it has enough power to suck out the dust settled on our sofas and carpets. My years-old, bulky Eureka Forbes vacuum cleaner was previously the primary and the only vacuum cleaner in the house that we used to clean the sitting areas and other hard surfaces. That thing came with a huge bin and a long stick to reach areas where it was difficult to reach. However, it isn’t as maneuverable and not the ideal choice to clean floors either.

On the other hand, the Dyson Omni-glide is comparatively lightweight and handy. It weighs about 1.9kgs and for the price you pay, it also looks quite premium. Parts with plastic don’t look cheap and the rotating motors also move around quite smoothly.

The Omni-glide is comparatively smaller than Dyson’s other range of vacuum cleaners. A smaller size also means that the vacuum cleaner has a smaller battery. Dyson claims that the device can run for 20 minutes. To my surprise, it performed even better. On a full charge, which takes about 3.5 hours, the Omni-glide lasted for about 27 minutes.

The articulating neck of the Fluffy head roller helps in easy maneuvering.

I used the vacuum cleaner in the Eco mode, which is the standard one among the two suction settings. You might wonder that Eco mode wouldn’t be as powerful but once you use it, you would be surprised by the amount of suction power it has. There’s also a “Max” mode, which can be used for areas like the gaps between sliding windows or your car’s mattress with different cleaner tools. However, since this mode requires more power, you would run out of battery very soon, Dyson claims that the Max mode offers up to 4 minutes of cleaning time on a single charge. So if you plan to use this particular mode quite often, be ready to shell out more money for additional swappable batteries.

The downside of this vacuum cleaner, other than the battery life, is the bin capacity. The Omni-glide has a tiny bin below the motor with a carrying capacity of 0.2L. After using the Omni-glide to clean one of our seating sofas, I was blown away by the amount of dirt and dust the machine had collected. The reaction was such because I had used my old vacuum cleaner a week ago and it was kind of unexpected to see the dirt pile inside the bin.

Of course, you can detach the bin and empty all the dirt but a slightly larger capacity would have been nice. Alternatively, Dyson could probably implement a mechanism that alerts the user about the bin reaching its full capacity and needs to be cleaned.

Cleaning Tools

As I mentioned earlier, I used the Omni-glide to clean most of the seating areas and carpets. It comes with multiple rollers and tools for different types of surfaces. For hard floors, there’s the fluffy cleaner head with two rollers that can pick large debris and dust particles. It also managed to clean flower petals, biscuit crumbs, and thread strings lying on the floor without any obstruction. The roller head is quite smooth and also helps move forward, backward, and even sideways quite easily. It has four 360-degree castors in between the two rollers that aid in maneuvering the vacuum cleaner head. The top portion of the soft roller also has an articulating neck, which is useful to clean the surfaces that are hard to reach like underneath the sofa.

For carpets and sofas, Dyson offers a smaller motorised tool, which also comes with a single roller. This one is also useful to pick up hair strands and ground-in dirt. Also packed inside the box is a motorised brush bar, which when attached with the long stick to the motor can be used to clean areas like the AC vents or corners of the sofa/ furniture. There is also a Worktop tool, which can be used to clean tables and kitchen worktops. I found this one particularly handy during recent renovation work at my place when there were pieces of wooden sawdust everywhere on my work desk.

Verdict

Finally, should you consider buying the Dyson Omni-glide? Based on my experience, the Dyson Omni-glide vacuum cleaner provides enough power to clean debris and dust found in households. Just like its name, the vacuum glider glides through both hard and soft surfaces to offer a smooth cleaning experience. The only couple of downsides though are the relatively-less battery life and smaller bin. If you are someone who cleans a room at a time, the Omni-glide can be a perfect cleaning companion. The appliance offers excellent value for money with its festive pricing of Rs 19,900 on Dyson India’s website, which otherwise is sold for Rs 34,900.

The Omni-glide is ideal for spot-cleaning but does not offer enough juice on a single charge to clean up the entire house. For those who regularly clean their entire home and want better battery life, consider checking the Dyson V11 Absolut Pro, which has a claimed battery life of 60 mins. It also has a higher suction power of 185kW compared to 50kW on the Omni-glide. However, it is priced higher at Rs 44,900 (Rs 52,900 launch price) at the time of writing this.

Another thing worth noting is the post-sale service. I reached out to the Dyson customer case as any other regular person (and not someone from Moneycontrol). The technical executive provided all the required information - right from the step-by-step installation to the Dos and Don’ts. The company offers a two-year warranty on its products from the date of purchase. Additionally, customers can also reach out to Dyson India customer care service as and when required for any queries.
