Navjot Singh Sidhu is a retired international cricketer, politician and a television personality. The current Punjab Congress Chief had joined politics in 2004. He had won on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from the Amritsar seat in the 2004 general elections. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2016 from Punjab before he resigned from the position the same year and quit the party. In January 2017, Sidhu joined the Indian National Congress. He contested from Amritsar East in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections and won by a margin of 42,809 votes. Initially in September 2016, he had formally announced his new political front 'Awaaz-e-Punjab’ along with Pargat Singh and Bains brothers claiming to fight against those working against Punjab. In his 18 years cricket career, he played 51 Test matches, scored 27 first class centuries and over 100 ODIs scoring over 7,000 international runs. He retired from cricket in December 1999. After which, he also tried his hands on commentary. He was also a judge of comedy shows like The Great Indian Laughter challenge from 2005-2008. He was a permanent guest in Comedy Nights with Kapil (2013-2015) and later in The Kapil Sharma Show (2016-2019). He had also participated in Bigg Boss 2012. Sidhu has been surrounded by many controversies throughout his life. He was involved in a 1988 road rage case in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh had died. As a cricketer, he walked out of an Indian Test team on tour in England in 1996 when he had a dispute with captain Mohammad Azharuddin. He returned to the team later and retired in 1999. In early 2019, Sidhu caused controversy when he was interpreted as supporting Pakistan, in his response to the Pulwama Terrorist Attack that killed 40 personnel of India's border security forces.
