Cabinet okays 3 metro rail projects in Karnataka and Maharashtra for over Rs 30,000 cr

The Union Cabinet on August 16 approved three metro rail projects in the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra, with a total estimated cost of about Rs 30,765 crore.

The Cabinet approved two corridors of Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase-3, having a total project completion cost estimated at Rs 15,611 crore. The first corridor will run from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura with 21 stations, while the second will be from Hosahalli to Kadabagere with nine stations. The project will be operational by 2029.

"This will enhance the commuter experience and boost 'Ease of Living'," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X after the Cabinet announcements.

Approval was also given for the Thane integral Ring Metro Rail Project at a total cost of Rs 12,200 crore. This project will connect prominent areas like Naupada, Wagle Estate, Dongripada, Hiranandani Estate, Kolshet, Saket, among others, according to a government statement.

The cabinet also approved Pune Metro Phase-1 project extension towards south from Swargate to Katraj spanning 5.46 km. The total completion cost of the project is Rs 2,954.53 crore and is to be operational by 2029.

"It is our constant endeavour to ensure Maharashtra gets modern infrastructure," Modi said, while adding that the Thane project "is a landmark infrastructure project which will link key areas in and around Thane, as well as enhance comfort and convenience," while adding the the government considers Pune as "an important economic centre of our nation and we are committed to boosting the city's infrastructure".

Today's Cabinet also approved two new civil enclaves at Bagdgora airport in West Bengal and Bihta in Bihar's Patna.

The new civil enclave at Bagdgora Airport, will have an estimated cost of Rs 1,549 crore, which will include construction of an Apron capable of accommodating 10 parking bays suitable for A-321 type aircraft.

The enclave at Bihta will have an estimated cost of Rs 1,413 crore, and includes construction of an apron capable of accommodating 10 parking bays suitable for A-321/B-737-800/A-320 type aircraft, the government said.

"Increased air connectivity is great news for tourism and commercial growth. The Cabinet today has approved new civilian enclaves at Bagdogra in West Bengal and Bihta in Bihar. This will ensure seamless travel to and from these places," Modi also said in his comments.
