French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu resigned on Monday, mere hours after unveiling his new cabinet. He had assumed office on September 9, 2025.

Reuters reported that Lecornu’s departure followed mounting pressure from both allies and opponents who threatened to topple his government.

On Sunday, Lecornu, a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, had appointed his ministers, with the cabinet scheduled to hold its first meeting on Monday afternoon.

However, the new lineup displeased many, with critics arguing it was either too right-wing or insufficiently so, raising doubts about its longevity, the report noted.

France was already entrenched in a political crisis, with a fragmented parliament preventing any group from holding a majority.

Lecornu submitted his resignation to Macron on Monday morning.

“Mr Sebastien Lecornu has submitted the resignation of his Government to the President of the Republic, who has accepted it,” an official statement said.

Lecornu became Macron’s fifth prime minister in just two years.
