Summer brings sunshine, warmth, and outdoor activities, but it also brings challenges for those with oily skin. The increase in temperature and humidity can trigger excess sebum production, leading to shiny skin, clogged pores, and acne breakouts. Fortunately, there are several effective home treatments to help manage oily skin during the summer months.

Aloe vera cleanser

Aloe vera is a natural astringent with antibacterial properties, making it ideal for oily skin. It helps to remove excess oil and dirt from the skin's surface, reducing the risk of clogged pores and acne.

How to use:

  • Extract fresh aloe vera gel from a leaf.
  • Apply the gel evenly on your face.
  • Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat this twice daily for best results.

Lemon and honey mask

Lemon juice is a natural astringent that helps to reduce oiliness, while honey has antibacterial and moisturising properties. Together, they form a potent mask for controlling oil and preventing acne.

How to use:

  • Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice with one tablespoon of honey.
  • Apply the mixture to your face, avoiding the eye area.
  • Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
  • Use this mask 2-3 times a week.

Cucumber and yoghurt pack

Cucumber has cooling and astringent properties that help to soothe the skin and reduce oiliness. Yogurt contains lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and tightens pores.

How to use:

  • Blend half a cucumber to make a smooth paste.
  • Mix the cucumber paste with two tablespoons of yoghurt.
  • Apply the pack to your face and leave it on for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with cold water.
  • Apply this pack twice a week.

Green tea toner

Green tea is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to control sebum production and reduce acne.

How to use:

  • Brew a cup of green tea and let it cool.
  • Pour the tea into a spray bottle.
  • Use it as a toner by spraying it on your face or applying it with a cotton pad.
  • Use this toner daily, especially after cleansing.

Oatmeal and egg white scrub

Oatmeal absorbs excess oil and exfoliates the skin, while egg whites tighten pores and reduce oiliness.

How to use:

  • Mix two tablespoons of ground oatmeal with one egg white.
  • Apply the mixture to your face and gently scrub in circular motions.
  • Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
  • Use this scrub once a week.

Rose water mist

Rose water is a natural toner that helps to balance the skin’s oil levels and keep it hydrated. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

How to use:

  • Pour pure rose water into a spray bottle.
  • Spritz your face with rose water several times a day.
  • This can be used daily and as often as needed.

Tea tree oil spot treatment

Tea tree oil is known for its powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to control oil production and treat acne.

How to use:

  • Dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil (such as jojoba or coconut oil) in a 1:9 ratio.
  • Apply the diluted oil to acne-prone areas using a cotton swab.
  • Leave it on overnight and rinse off in the morning.
  • Use this treatment as needed.
