When the monsoon arrives, so do problems like hair clumps in the shower and itchy skin that just won’t go away. While home remedies and viral hacks may seem helpful, it's always better to follow consistent care and seek advice from a dermatologist to prevent seasonal issues from becoming long-term concerns.

According to Dr Anindita Sarkar, Chief Medical Officer, Clinikally & Aayna Clinics. "Most monsoon-related hair and skin troubles have very simple science behind them. Small, regular care works better than quick remedies. People also need to stop believing in myths about monsoon hair care.

Here are some common myths and facts

Myth 1: Rainwater makes hair fallFact: Not true. Hair fall during monsoon is mostly seasonal and temporary,” explains Dr Sarkar. “High humidity weakens your scalp’s barrier, sweat allows fungus to grow, and stress can add to shedding. Rain is more of a trigger than a cause,”

Myth 2: Heavy oiling can stop hair fall
Thick layers of oil often do more harm than good. “They trap moisture, dirt and pollution, leaving the scalp itchy. Lightweight oils or serums are fine, but always wash the scalp thoroughly,” says Dr Sarkar.

Myth 3: Frizz means you need more conditioner
Frizz isn’t a lack of conditioner, it’s your hair shaft swelling in humid air. “Over-conditioning makes hair limp. Instead, try anti-frizz serums, light leave-ins, and switch to a microfiber towel,” suggests Dr Sarkar.

Myth 4: Rinsing is enough after rain
Just rinsing won’t clear the pollutants or fungus that cling to wet hair. “A mild clarifying shampoo is a must if you get drenched in the rain,” says Dr Sarkar.

Myth 5: Anti-dandruff shampoo is only for flakes
Many wait until they see flakes, but dandruff starts before that. “Humidity fuels fungal growth even before visible dandruff. Use an antifungal shampoo once or twice a week to keep the scalp balanced,” cautions Dr Sarkar.
