Diwali is all about celebrating in style and buying new festive wear to doll up in trendy fits. This year, however, popular celebrities chose to go the sustainable way — not only by digging out existing outfits from their wardrobes but also by reviving archival designs that were once admired for their enviable beauty.
Be it Ananya Panday’s more than 20-year-old suit from her mom’s closet or Alia Bhatt wearing a saree design that was first created 30 years ago, stars dazzled every bit in the ensembles they wore, styling them with stunning accessories. What stood out was the emotional value that these pieces held, making the festival even more special.
Ananya Panday
Ananya looked breathtaking in a striking hot pink suit with a shirt and pyjamis taken from her mom’s closet. The desi Indian suit featured floral silver floral motifs and a border along the hem, paired with a matching dupatta. It was designed by late designer Rohit Bal. Sharing the picture, the actress wrote, “Vintage Gudda, from my mom’s closet 20+ years ago.” The sleeveless number looked complete on its own and was styled with just a pair of earrings and a watch.

With another desi outfit, Ananya yet again picked a jewellery piece from her mother’s wardrobe. Sharing more details, she wrote, “Earrings gifted to my mom by dadi on her wedding day and stolen by me from her on Diwali day.”
Alia Bhatt
For the ‘gharwali’ Diwali at the Kapoors, Alia Bhatt stole the spotlight in an archival Ritu Kumar design that stylist Rhea Kapoor detailed on her Instagram account. She wrote, “Remembering the Silk Road…From the Ritu Kumar archives, this sari revives one of her earliest designs, first created over 30 years ago by a woman who went on to redefine Indian couture. The silver tikki on rose gold silk carries her signature. A piece of fashion history, preserved in thread.”

Alia looked breathtaking in the traditional rose gold silk saree with floral embroidery across the drape. The pleats and pallu were tied fashionably, showcasing the border. The actress paired it with a bustier featuring a sweetheart neckline and glamorous straps and added a matching embroidered open jacket to complete the look. Her ensemble was accessorised with a statement choker, maang tikka, and a bracelet.
Mira Kapoor
Mira wore an Anamika Khanna lehenga that was pulled out from her wardrobe. Sharing more details, she wrote, “An Anamika lehenga from 10 years ago that still fits is the ace trail win.” And the black-purple lehenga indeed looked stunning for its simplicity and beauty, highlighted with floral appliqués on the blouse. The choli featured a beautiful neckline and sleeves, and the dupatta was draped like a saree. It looked both comfy and stylish for a night out. She accessorised with a trendy sapphire necklace, diamond earrings with a sapphire drop, and a sapphire ring. Also, it was hard not to notice her rock-solid pear-shaped diamond ring.
