World Physiotherapy Day, celebrated on September 8 each year, highlights the significant role that physiotherapists play in promoting health, wellness, and rehabilitation. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of physiotherapy in managing a wide range of conditions, from musculoskeletal disorders to neurological and cardiovascular diseases.

Physiotherapy not only aids in recovery from injury or surgery but also enhances the quality of life for those living with chronic conditions. It emphasises the importance of physical movement in overall health, preventing disability, and promoting active, independent living. On this day, the global physiotherapy community comes together to celebrate their contribution to healthcare, encourage preventive practices, and inspire people to take charge of their physical well-being through therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation. Here are key factors highlighting the role of physiotherapy in managing neurological disorders, according to physiotherapist Vandana Rai from Balaji Healthcare Global, Mumbai.

Enhancing mobility

Physiotherapy restores and maintains movement in patients with conditions like stroke, spinal cord injury, or Parkinson’s disease. Through exercises and mobility training, physiotherapists help improve walking, transfers, and other functional movements, enhancing independence in daily activities.

Improving balance and coordination

Neurological disorders often impair balance and coordination. Physiotherapy employs exercises to retrain these skills, reducing the risk of falls and promoting steadier movements, which is especially critical for conditions like multiple sclerosis or cerebellar ataxia.

Strengthening muscles

Muscle weakness or paralysis is common in neurological conditions. Strengthening exercises target affected muscles to build endurance, prevent muscle atrophy, and increase overall strength, enabling better motor function and movement control.

Managing spasticity and muscle tone

Neurological disorders can cause spasticity or abnormal muscle tone, leading to stiffness and difficulty with movement. Physiotherapists use stretching techniques, passive movements, and modalities like heat therapy to manage spasticity and improve flexibility.

Enhancing neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire itself, is key to recovery. Physiotherapy helps stimulate neuroplasticity by engaging patients in repetitive, task-specific exercises that retrain the brain to regain lost functions, especially after strokes or traumatic brain injuries.

Pain relief

Many neurological conditions involve chronic pain, such as neuropathy or multiple sclerosis. Physiotherapists use techniques like manual therapy, electrical stimulation, and therapeutic exercises to relieve pain, reduce discomfort, and enhance overall well-being.

Improving quality of life

By addressing physical impairments and promoting functional recovery, physiotherapy helps patients regain independence and confidence. It empowers them to perform daily tasks with less assistance, significantly improving their quality of life and emotional health.
