Every year, September 8 is marked as World Physiotherapy Day. Physiotherapy is for anyone who wants to live a healthier and active life, and not just for seniors and athletes. This year, the theme is “Rehabilitation and Healthy Ageing”, a timely reminder as India’s ageing population continues to rise.

People often think physiotherapy is just some stretches after an injury. According to Dr Indramani Upadhyay, MPT (Ortho), HOD, The Centre for Knee & Hip Care in Ghaziabad, it’s so much more than that. “It’s about preventing problems before they begin, managing pain, improving mobility—and all without relying on surgery or long-term medication", says Dr Upadhyay.

Many people push through daily aches, hoping they disappear on their own. Some take painkillers and others rely on home remedies. “By the time most people come to us, the issue has often worsened”, says Dr Upadhyay. “Early physiotherapy can make a huge difference in preventing complications, speeding up recovery, and even avoiding surgery.”

Dr Upadhyay shares six simple but powerful ways physiotherapy can improve your day-to-day health, at any age:

Pain relief without popping pills: If you’re dealing with back pain, stiff joints, or neck aches, consult a physiotherapist. They can suggest safe, hands-on techniques and guided movements to ease pain without relying on pills.

Better posture, more energy: Sitting in a slouching position at your desk or constantly looking down at your phone can strain your back and neck. Physiotherapy helps correct posture, strengthen core muscles, and restore natural alignment.

Recovery after surgery or injury: For those who have had a fracture or a knee replacement, physiotherapy can help build strength and help them return to their routine faster.

Helping seniors stay steady on their feet: Many older people experience falls. For them, physiotherapy improves balance, muscle control, and coordination, therefore helping them walk confidently and maintain independence.

Supporting women’s health: Physiotherapy also plays a vital role in women’s health at every stage. It eases pregnancy discomfort and supports postnatal recovery, and also strengthens the pelvic floor.

Managing stress and breathing better: If you often feel tired and stressed, physiotherapy can help. It offers relaxation techniques, deep breathing exercises, and stretches that not only calm the body but also ease the mind.
