OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was served a legal notice dramatically during a public conversation at an event in San Francisco’s Sydney Goldstein Theater last week. The incident, which unfolded just minutes into the sold-out event, left the audience stunned and has since sparked widespread discussion online.
According to SFGATE, the confrontation occurred when a man seated in the second row abruptly rushed the stage, holding out a document and announcing that he had a subpoena for Altman. A subpoena is a legal order from a government agency or court that compels a person to either testify in a alegal proceeding or produce documents and other evidence. The event’s host, civic organiser Manny Yekutiel, quickly intercepted the man and handed the document to security, who escorted the intruder out as the audience booed, the New York Post reported.
Altman, though visibly startled, remained seated and unharmed.

‘Lawfully served’: San Francisco public defender confirms action
The following day, the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office confirmed that the man was one of its investigators, the New York Post reported.
“An investigator from the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office lawfully served a subpoena on Mr Altman because he is a potential witness in a pending criminal case,” spokesperson Valerie Ibarra said in a statement. She added that prior attempts had been made to serve the notice at OpenAI’s headquarters and through its online portal.
Activist group ‘Stop AI’ claims responsibility
The activist group Stop AI, known for staging protests outside OpenAI’s offices, claimed credit for the incident online. The group has been vocal in its criticism of the company’s AI policies and ethical practices.
Our public defender successfully subpoenaed Sam Altman to appear at our trial where we will be tried for non-violently blocking the front door of OpenAI on multiple occasions and blocking the road in front of their office. The interruption briefly overshadowed Altman’s wide-ranging conversation with Kerr, which touched on topics including wealth inequality, the future of artificial intelligence, and OpenAI’s evolving content policies.
‘One of my dumbest mistakes of the year': Altman on ChatGPT controversy
During the event, Altman also addressed the backlash over his October 14 post celebrating ChatGPT’s ability to generate erotic content for verified adult users. The post, which coincided with California governor Gavin Newsom’s veto of a bill aimed at regulating AI tools for minors, drew sharp criticism from lawmakers and parents.
“It was one of my dumbest mistakes of the year,” Altman admitted. “I wish I used a different example.” He defended the policy shift as part of OpenAI’s commitment to individual freedom for adults, while clarifying that the platform would continue to block content related to mental health or self-harm.
“We’re not here to draw moral lines for consenting adults,” he said, “but we do take safety seriously.”
