City of dreams, city of joy — Mumbai tops Asia’s happiness charts for 2025.

Happiness has found a new home — and it’s right here in Mumbai. According to Time Out’s City Life Index 2025, India’s bustling financial capital has officially been crowned the Happiest City in Asia, beating out destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, Chiang Mai, and Hanoi.

In a region celebrated for its vibrant cities, Mumbai’s win stands out. The ranking is based on insights from over 18,000 locals across Asia, who shared how their cities make them feel — not just about culture and food, but about life itself. The result? Mumbai emerged as the city that sparks the most joy, proving that happiness can thrive even in the fast-paced chaos of urban life.

What Makes a City Truly Happy?

It’s not just about fancy infrastructure or big salaries. Time Out’s survey dug deeper, asking residents to rate their city on factors like nightlife, food, affordability, culture, and overall quality of life. But the real differentiator? Happiness itself.

Respondents rated their cities based on five heartfelt statements:

  • My city makes me happy.
  • I feel happier in my city than other places I’ve visited or lived.
  • The people in my city seem happy.
  • I find joy in the everyday experiences my city offers.
  • The sense of happiness in my city has grown a lot recently.
Mumbai’s Joyful Spirit

A stunning 94% of Mumbaikars said their city makes them happy, while 89% shared they feel happier here than anywhere else they’ve lived or visited. Even more telling — 87% believe the city’s happiness levels have grown in recent years.

Perhaps it’s the city’s infectious energy — the rhythm of local trains, the calm of Marine Drive, and the warmth of its people. Maybe it’s the street food scene that unites everyone over a shared love for vada pav and cutting chai. Or maybe it’s the fact that Mumbai, despite its chaos, feels like home to millions chasing their dreams.

The city’s creative culture, entertainment industry, and endless opportunities also play a huge role in why locals feel fulfilled. As Time Out puts it, happiness here comes from “finding joy in the everyday.” And in Mumbai, there’s joy to be found everywhere — from a seaside sunset to a late-night movie at Regal.
