Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot has repeatedly sparked debate over how it generates content and uses user data. Recently, concerns around AI-generated images and personalisation have pushed privacy into focus. If you want more control, Grok allows users to manage how their X (formerly Twitter) data is used for personalisation. Users who prefer neutral responses or do not want their X activity influencing answers can disable these options directly from the settings.
Here is a step-by-step guide based on the current Grok data controls.
By default, Grok can use data linked to your X account to personalise responses. This includes information such as your X profile details, account settings, preferences, and posts that are publicly visible on your account. While this feature aims to tailor answers, some users may want to limit data usage for privacy or content neutrality reasons.
Where to find data controls in Grok
To manage how your data is used, you need to access the settings panel within Grok. Open Grok on your browser and click on your profile icon. From the menu, select Settings, then navigate to Data Controls. This section lists all options related to data usage, storage, and personalisation.
How to disable X-based personalisation
Under the Data Controls section, locate the option titled Personalize Grok using X. This setting allows Grok to use your X data for personalising responses and recommendations. To stop this:
Go to Settings in Grok.
Click on Data Controls from the left panel
Find Personalize Grok using X.
Toggle the switch off to disable it.
Once turned off, Grok will no longer use your X profile data, account information, location, settings, preferences, or viewable posts to personalise results.
Review related personalisation settings
In the same section, you may also see Personalize Grok with your conversation history. This option allows Grok to remember details from past chats to tailor responses. If you want an additional layer of control, you can turn this off as well. Private chats are not stored, and individual conversations can be deleted manually.
What happens after disabling X data usage
After disabling X-based personalisation, Grok will continue to function normally but responses will rely less on your social data and more on general prompts. You can revisit the Data Controls section anytime to re-enable the setting or review other options such as chat link sharing, storage usage, exporting account data, or clearing local cache.
Disabling personalisation gives you clearer control over how your data is used while continuing to access Grok’s core features.
