Filmmaker and writer Tahira Kashyap has once again displayed incredible strength and grace in the face of adversity. On World Health Day, she shared the news that her breast cancer had relapsed for the second time, seven years after her first diagnosis in 2018.

In an Instagram post, Tahira openly reflected on her journey with her followers, saying, “Seven-year itch or the power of regular screening—it’s a perspective,” before adding, “I’d like to go with the latter and encourage everyone to get regular mammograms. Round 2 for me… I’ve got this.”

She continued with an optimistic message: “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. But when life throws them at you again, calmly squeeze them into your favorite kala khatta drink and sip it with positive intentions. Because, one, it’s a better drink, and two, you know you’ll give it your all once again.”

Her honest and relatable words resonated with many, garnering widespread support. Celebrities flooded the comments with encouraging messages, with Mini Mathur writing, “You will win round 2 as well, Tahira. Stay on course. Keep going.” Guneet Monga added, “I love you! ️ this too shall pass and come out of this victorious ️.” Tahira’s husband, Ayushmann Khurrana, sweetly referred to her as “My hero️" in his comment.

What is cancer recurrence?

Cancer recurrence is a deeply concerning challenge for those who have undergone treatment and achieved remission. It refers to the return of cancer after a period where it was undetectable or in remission.

According to Dr Srinath D, ortho oncologist and founder of Asha Hospital and Research Centre, "Recurrence occurs when a small number of cancer cells survive the initial treatment and later grow again. These cells can remain hidden, unaffected, or escape the effects of the treatment, making them resilient and resistant to further therapy."

Despite receiving adequate treatment, cancer cells can mutate over time, changing in ways that allow them to become stronger and more resistant to the initial treatment. This mutation is one reason why recurrence is possible, even after a prolonged period of remission.

How to avoid cancer recurrence

While recurrence cannot always be prevented, several strategies can reduce the risk, according to Dr Suman Karanth, senior consultant, medical oncology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram:

  • Adherence to treatment: Following prescribed therapies, such as chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy, is essential to minimise the risk of recurrence. As Dr. Srinath emphasizes, completing treatment, including hormone therapies, is crucial in reducing recurrence.
  • Healthy lifestyle: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can help boost immunity and overall health. Limiting red and processed meats and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol intake are also important preventative measures.
  • Physical activity: Engaging in regular exercise, including both aerobic and strength training activities, has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrence by 20-30 percent. Aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week is beneficial.
  • Routine health check-ups: Regular screenings and early detection are vital for catching recurrence early. Age-appropriate cancer screenings and regular mammograms can help detect any changes that might indicate a recurrence.
  • Genetic counseling: For those with a family history of cancer or known gene mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2, genetic counseling and preventive measures, including prophylactic surgeries, may be recommended.

"Cancer recurrence is a complex and challenging reality for many patients, but with the right knowledge, treatment, and preventive strategies, its impact can be managed. Staying vigilant for signs of recurrence, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and adhering to prescribed treatments significantly improve the chances of successfully managing any recurrence that may occur," Dr Srinath concludes.
