Scoliosis symptoms in kids: Parents, not all posture problems are harmless

Early signs of scoliosis in children: What you think is just slouching in your child might actually be scoliosis. Often mistaken for bad posture, this sideways curve of the spine needs early detection and care. Spine and Scoliosis Surgeon explains what signs to look out for and how timely steps can make all the difference.

Parents repeatedly tell their children to stand up straight or stop slouching, assuming it’s a simple posture problem. But what if it isn’t? Scoliosis, a sideways curve of the spine, is surprisingly common in children and teens, and can, many a time, go unnoticed. It is important first parents to spot the early signs before it leads to serious complications.

Poor posture has become increasingly common among children today, thanks to long hours spent hunched over mobile phones, heavy schoolbags, and sedentary habits. While slouching may seem normal, it’s important to know that not all posture issues are harmless, sometimes, what looks like laziness or habit could actually be scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves sideways and needs medical attention. “When a parent tells their child to straighten up repeatedly, but the curve stays, it’s time to dig deeper,” says Prof Dr Dhiraj Sonawane, Spine and Scoliosis Surgeon, Mumbai. “In scoliosis, the spine curves sideways in a C or S shape. If untreated, it can progress and affect the child’s movement, breathing, and confidence,” he warns.

Causes of scoliosis and early action:

Most cases are idiopathic, with no known cause, says Dr Sonawane. “But it’s commonly seen in children aged 10–15, right around their growth spurts. It might also stem from birth defects, muscular conditions, or even injury. Early diagnosis and non-surgical treatment in growing children give good results. Mild curves may need simple monitoring. But missed or ignored signs can lead to worsening curves that need surgery,” says Dr Sonawane.

He suggests parents should never ignroe the following 10 symptoms:

  • Notice uneven shoulders: If one shoulder seems higher than the other, even when standing straight, it’s a red flag for scoliosis.
  • Watch for a prominent shoulder blade: A bulging or wing-like shoulder blade, more noticeable on one side, might indicate a spine curve underneath.
  • Check for uneven waist or hips: If one hip juts out or clothes fit unevenly around the waist, it’s worth checking the spine.

  • Look for body leaning to one side: Children may unconsciously lean to one side to compensate for spinal imbalance.
  • Do the forward bending test: Ask your child to bend forward slowly. A rib hump or one side rising more is a classic sign of scoliosis.
  • Observe frequent posture corrections: If your child constantly adjusts their sitting or standing position, it could be from spinal discomfort.
  • Monitor for back pain or fatigue: Although rare in early scoliosis, some children may complain of general backache or feeling tired easily.
  • Notice clothing fitting oddly: If shirts hang unevenly or skirt lines tilt, it might be due to spinal misalignment.
  • Check shoulder height in photos: Review candid photos. if one shoulder or hip seems off repeatedly, consult your doctor.
Trust your instinct and get a screening

If something feels off with your child’s posture, don’t wait. A quick clinical screening is painless and helpful.
