COVID-19 cases are slowly on the rise again in UK, as a result health experts are keeping a close eye on two newly identified variants, named Nimbus and Stratus. Doctors say that while infections are increasing, the symptoms remain largely mild and similar to other seasonal viruses making the rounds.

As reported by Mirror, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) claims that the Stratus variant (lineage XFG) currently accounts for about 63% of sequenced Covid cases, while Nimbus makes up around 25%. The World Health Organization has classified Stratus as a “variant under monitoring” and stressed that the global health risk remains minimal.

Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, Dr Sara Kayat explained that variants are a normal part of how viruses evolve. “As Covid spreads from person to person, it changes slightly each time. Right now, these cases are rising alongside other respiratory illnesses like flu and rhinovirus, but most people are reporting only mild symptoms,” she said.

What are the Symptoms to Watch For

Dr Sara highlighted a few “tell-tale signs” of the Stratus variant. These include:

  • A hoarse voice
  • A “razor blade” sore throat
  • Other common COVID-19 symptoms remain the same: headaches, runny or blocked nose, cough, and fatigue.

According to Mirror reports, UKHSA data shows hospital admissions for Covid are creeping up — from 2.0 per 100,000 people last week to 2.73 per 100,000 this week. Rhinovirus positivity has also increased sharply, from 10.9% to 14.8%. Flu cases are slowly rising too, which is expected during this time of year.

Expert Advice on Safety Precautions

Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, a consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, encouraged individuals to receive their winter vaccinations against RSV, Covid-19, and flu if they are eligible, according to The Mirror. "The best protection is provided via vaccination. "Try to limit contact with others, especially vulnerable people, if you have symptoms like fever, cough, or body aches," he advised.

He also urged people to continue with simple precautions — wearing a mask if you feel unwell, washing hands regularly, and disposing of tissues properly.

The bottom line is that there’s no need for alarm, but staying updated on vaccines and following basic hygiene can help protect both you and your community this winter.
