Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Faces Delay: Railway Board Flags Safety and Furnishing Issues

The launch of the much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper train, initially expected in October 2025, has been postponed once again following observations from the Railway Board regarding furnishing and safety deficiencies.

Although Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier suggested that the train would debut in October, the rollout has been delayed as the second rake remains in the final stages of production, with ongoing work on the interiors.

The Railway Board has given in-principle approval for the operation of the 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper rake, but it has also called for corrections in several areas before the train can begin passenger service.

In a communication sent to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and all railway zones, the Board cited concerns about furnishing quality, design, and overall workmanship.

• Specific issues highlighted include:
• Sharp corners and edges in the berthing area
• Improperly designed window curtain handles
• “Pigeon pockets” between berth connectors that may complicate cleaning and maintenance

The Board has instructed that these deficiencies be rectified immediately in the current rake and that improvements be incorporated in future builds.

During trial runs, the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) made similar observations, which were communicated to RDSO. The organisation later submitted an updated compliance report on September 1, 2025, according to a PTI report.

The Ministry of Railways has reiterated that all upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains must strictly adhere to operational and safety standards, including:

• Implementation of comprehensive fire safety measures
• Integration of Kavach 4.0, India’s indigenous train collision avoidance system
• Installation of reliable communication systems connecting loco pilots, train managers, and station masters
• Proper inspection and upkeep of all brake systems

In addition, the Ministry has directed all railway zones to train loco pilots to disconnect the semi-permanent coupler within 15 minutes during emergencies, with suitable tools provided in driver and guard kits.

Zones have also been asked to ensure the presence of trained technical teams capable of managing en-route mechanical issues and emergencies to guarantee safe and efficient operations once the Vande Bharat Sleeper enters service.
