Imagine sudden bouts of watery diarrhea, severe dehydration, and vomiting. These are the alarming symptoms of cholera. Recently, Bengaluru has reported an uptick in cholera cases, underscoring the importance of staying vigilant and practicing preventive measures to protect yourself and your loved ones.
As summer arrives, the risk of contracting cholera and other waterborne diseases increases. Dr Manoj Mehta, Senior Consultant, General Physician at Sterling Hospitals, Vadodara, explains, "Cholera is transmitted via contaminated water, with feces contamination being the primary source of infection." Prevention is essential in combating the spread of cholera, says doctor Mehta and adds, “A conscientious approach to water safety and sanitation can make a significant difference in preventing the spread of cholera. Besides, maintaining vigilance, gaining knowledge, and adopting proactive measures are essential for ensuring your personal safety”
Dr Mehta suggests some important preventive tips to ensure safety:
Consume clean water: Consuming clean water is important in preventing cholera. Ensure that your water supply is safe by using efficient water purification methods such as boiling, filtration, or chemical treatments. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends drinking bottled or treated water, especially in areas prone to cholera outbreaks.
Use efficient purification methods: To minimise your risk of exposure to cholera-causing bacteria, use purification methods such as boiling water for at least one minute or using a water purifier with a filter. Additionally, chemical treatments like chlorine tablets can help ensure water safety for consumption.
Cook your food thoroughly: Avoid undercooked or raw foods, particularly seafood, as these can harbor bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasise the importance of properly cooking food to prevent cholera. When dining out, choose restaurants and hotels that follow strict hygiene practices.
Maintain proper hygiene: Proper hygiene is key to avoiding cholera. Wash your hands with soap and water regularly, especially before eating or handling food and after using the restroom. Hand sanitizers are an alternative when soap and water are not available. Keeping surfaces and utensils clean can also help prevent the spread of the disease.
Be careful about dehydration: Cholera can cause rapid dehydration due to diarrhea and vomiting, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Keep an eye out for these symptoms, and seek medical attention immediately if they occur. Hydration with clean water or oral rehydration solutions is essential for recovery.
Say no to street food: Street food may contain cholera-causing bacteria due to contaminated water or unsanitary preparation methods. Opt for freshly cooked meals from reputable sources instead, and avoid raw or undercooked ingredients.
