Pixar is just feeling one emotion: Joy.
Inside Out 2, after just two weeks of its release, has already surpassed Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and is standing above rest as the highest grossing movie of the year.
Disney and Pixar’s sequel has earned $355 million in North America and $724 million internationally to date, dethroning the previous record holder Dune: Part Two which grossed $282 million domestically and $711 million worldwide. Reports project that the animated sequel will be the first movie to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide in 2024.
After a slow start for films this summer at the box office, Inside Out 2 is breathing fresh air into theatre owners. They are also hoping that the upcoming releases like A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28), Despicable Me 4 (July 3), Twisters (July 19) and Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26) can continue, if not exceed, the pace that has been kickstarted by the release of Inside Out 2.
The sequel to the hit 2015 Inside Out has also been a gift to the box office slump that Pixar had been facing for a while. The film, which cost $200 million to produce, has also grossed $32.2 million globally in Imax. It is also the fourth highest earning animated film ever for Imax. The sequel is enjoying a positive word of mouth which has been a gift for their overall earnings.
Tony Chambers, Disney’s executive vice president for theatrical distribution, said, “If it was ever in doubt, people continue and are still willing to go to the cinema to see great movies, and with 92% critics and 96 percent audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, there’s no better example of this than Inside Out 2.”
The first film followed the inner thoughts of a young girl, Riley. In the sequel, Riley, has grown up to become a teenager and is dealing with new emotions like envy and anxiety. The first instalment opened with $90 million in its first weekend in 2015.
