Mohini Dey, the renowned bassist, recently addressed baseless rumors about her alleged relationship with legendary musician AR Rahman. She strongly denied the allegations, emphasizing that Rahman is “like a father” to her and holds a significant role in her musical journey.
The speculation began when AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu announced their separation on November 19, after 29 years of marriage. Around the same time, Mohini Dey disclosed her divorce from her husband, Mark Hartsuch. This coincidence fueled unwarranted rumors about a link-up between Rahman and Dey. In response, Mohini shared a heartfelt video on Instagram, categorically dismissing the claims and expressing her dismay at the media’s intrusion into personal matters.
In her video, Mohini stated, “It is utterly unbelievable to see the amount of misinformation and baseless assumptions/claims against me and @arrahman. I honor my times as a kid working with @arrahman throughout my 8.5 years of working with him for his movies, tours, etc.” She highlighted the deep professional and mentor-mentee relationship she shares with Rahman, adding, “He is like a father to me.”
Mohini elaborated on her bond with AR Rahman, describing him as a pivotal figure in her career. “AR Rahman is a legend, and he gave me the freedom to shine in his shows and musical arrangements during recording sessions,” she explained. Mohini also credited Rahman for his support and encouragement, which played a crucial role in shaping her as an artist.
The bassist also took the opportunity to acknowledge other father figures in her life, including her late father, Ranjit Barot, and Louiz Banks. “These figures have played vital roles in my career and upbringing. My dad taught me everything about music, Ranjit Barot introduced me to the industry, and AR Rahman gave me a platform to express myself creatively,” Mohini shared.
Despite the rumors, Mohini urged the media and the public to respect their privacy. “Media/Paps do not understand the effect it has on people’s minds and lives. Be sensitive. I don’t owe anyone any explanations, but I also don’t want this to brew and interrupt my day,” she said. Mohini expressed disappointment in how the media sensationalized the events, calling it “criminal” and stating, “It saddens me to see people’s state of mind.”
Adding her perspective on the age difference, Mohini pointed out that AR Rahman is younger than her father and shares a familial bond with her. “Rahman’s daughters and I are of the same age. This makes these rumors even more ridiculous,” she remarked.
The rumors also prompted a response from AR Rahman and his family. His three children and ex-partner Saira Banu dismissed the speculations, vouching for Rahman’s integrity. In a statement, Rahman condemned the misinformation and warned of legal action against those spreading false claims.
Mohini concluded her note with a plea for kindness and understanding. “I request everyone to be kind as it’s their personal matter. Let us focus on what truly matters—music and creativity, rather than indulging in baseless gossip,” she appealed.
