Back in September 2021, Spotify Hi-Fi was going to be the new lossless streaming service for the music playback app, and it was expected to be launched by the end of 2021. Spotify’s current bitrate tops out at 320kbps, but with its Hi-Fi streaming, we can expect much higher quality 1411kbps streaming.
Spotify Hi-Fi or lossless audio streaming: All the details
According to OhltsTom on Reddit via Android Authority, Spotify seems to be testing Spotify Hi-Fi, or “Enhanced Listening,” which may be its final name. The post has several screenshots showing how the service would work and what options would be available to the consumer once the add-on goes live in the app.
The leak was spotted in version 1.2.36 of Spotify on the desktop version and suggests that users can listen to their music in the "highest quality" (lossless) offline so long as they've set their download settings to reflect it. It also shows 2117 kbps of music streaming, which could consume 15.9MB of data per minute.
Spotify also mentions that even 24-bit lossless is available on selected songs that can be played via the FLAC audio format. The screenshots also suggest that this Spotify HiFi option won’t be limited to in-line connections, but would rather be a feature that allows for high-end streaming within your Wi-Fi network, named Spotify Connect.
The final release date of the Spotify Hi-Fi or lossless audio streaming service to consumers, is still unknown, but these leaked screenshots will rekindle hope in those who remain optimistic. Many Reddit users have also suggested that it could be in the final stages of completion and could be officially unveiled in the HIGH END Munich 2024 show.
