The 16th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 will see the Gujarat Giants, led by Beth Mooney, take on Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, March 9. The toss will take place at 7pm India time and the first ball is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Gujarat are placed last on the points table, with just one win from five matches which came in their latest appearance, in a high-scoring encounter against Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. They won the match by 19 runs, thanks to an opening century stand between half-centurions Laura Wolvaardt and top-scorer and Player of the Match Beth Mooney, who made an unbeaten 85 off 51 balls.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, currently occupy the second position on the points table, with four wins from six matches. They are coming off a 42-run victory over the UP Warriorz, and will be looking to consolidate the second spot while the race for the third and final place for the playoffs heats up.

Beth Mooney led from the front in the last match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 6, helping the Giants register their first victory of the season. Her 80-plus knock was anchored in a 360-degree play and featured 12 fours and a six, the flick being her most productive shot, fetching her 16 runs. Her running between the wickets was as eye-catching: she took 20 singles and four twos.

Saika Ishaque, one of the finds of the inaugural WPL, returned 3 for 27 from her four overs against the UP Warriorz, her best haul of the second edition of the tournament so far. Ishaque’s performance has been on the up in recent games, and she would be keen on adding to her tally, which includes five wickets so far.
