World Test Championship latest points table: India and Australia engaged in a gripping Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which the hosts won by 184 runs. The outcome saw Australia take a 2-1 lead in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy with the focus now shifting in the final affair, which will be played in Sydney from January 3.

If we look at the points table, South Africa, who clinched a thrilling two-wicket win against Pakistan in Centurion on Saturday, have already qualified for the WTC final 2023-25. The summit clash will take place at Lord's as Australia, who are also the defending champions, emerge as the top contender to challenge Proteas at cricket's most iconic venue.

Coming back to the table, South Africa are currently at the top with 66.67 win percentage. The second spot is occupied by Australia, whose win percentage saw a massive climb to 61.46. Ahead of the encounter Australia were still at the second position but there win percentage was 58.89.

India, on the other hand, are still at the third position but their WTC final hopes took a huge blow following the defeat at the MCG. The win percentage slid from 55.88 to 52.78 and now all will depend on how the team responds in Sydney.

If Australia manage a draw or defeat India in the next encounter, Rohit Sharma and Co. will be automatically out of the race. However, if India manage to settle the score and level the series 2-2, it'll keep the gates open for the team but will be heavily dependent on Sri Lanka, who play Australia next.

Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:

If India draw 2-2: Sri Lanka must defeat Australia 2-0

If this is the case, then India’s win percentage would reach 55.26, while Australia’s will stand at 54.26. However, even if Australia manage to draw one match, it could end with a win percentage of 56.48.

If India lose the series: India will be out of contention
