Cardiologist reveals how walking can change your life: “Here’s what happens every minute you walk…”

October 09, 2025 / 13:06 IST

When it comes to fitness, movement is key. If you don’t have time for intense workouts, even something as simple as a daily walk can help you stay active and healthy. Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist, took to his Instagram account to explain how every minute of your walk matters and positively impacts your body.

Talking about the transformative benefits, he wrote, “I prescribe this more often than pills: just 30–60 minutes of walking a day can literally transform your heart, your mind, and your life. I’ve seen patients go from exhausted to energised, anxious and peaceful — not because of a new drug, but because they started to move.”

He went on to list the benefits of walking based on the amount of time you spend moving every minute:

1 min: Blood flow surges — your heart thanks you

5 min: Mood lifts, anxiety eases

10 min: Cortisol (stress hormone) drops

15 min: Blood sugar starts to balance

30 min: Fat burning switches on

45 min: Mental fog fades, overthinking quiets

60 min: Dopamine (your happiness fuel) rises

While walking offers many health benefits, it is often underrated as it requires very little effort. “No fancy gym. No supplements. Just you, your heart, and a few consistent steps. Walking is the most underrated therapy I know — for your body, brain, and soul,” Dr. Yaranov pointed out. He also emphasised on the importance of starting small and staying consistent.

For those who struggle to find time for movement, Dan Go, a fitness coach, earlier revealed walking cheat codes to burn more fat and promote longevity. These include:

Japanese Interval Walking: 3 min normal, 3 min fast

Incline Walking - 5% grade = 50% more calories

Walk After Meals: Cuts glucose spike by 30%

Fasted Morning Walk: Pure fat-burning mode

Under Desk Treadmill: 10k steps while working

Pyramid Walking Intervals: Progressive speed bursts

Rucking: Add 20 lbs, torch 3x calories
