Japan has streamlined its immigration process, making Permanent Residency (PR) an unexpectedly affordable goal for Indian nationals. With an application fee of just ¥8,000 (approximately Rs 5,000)—a cost lower than a round-trip flight ticket to the country—Japan is opening its doors to skilled professionals and long-term residents seeking indefinite stay, work, and study rights.
This policy change comes as a response to Japan’s demographic issues, such as a shrinking population and an aging labor force. By introducing a simpler and more affordable route to permanent residency, the Japanese government seeks to strengthen its economy by attracting global talent — especially from countries like India, known for their expertise in technology and engineering.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
The standard pathway to Japanese PR requires a continuous residence of at least 10 years, with a minimum of 5 years spent on a valid work or family-related visa. However, several accelerated pathways can significantly shorten this timeline for qualified applicants.
Fast-Track Options:
Japan's Point-Based Preference System offers a much quicker route for high-value talent. Under this system:
Applicants who score 70 points or more can apply for PR after just 3 years of continuous residence.
Those who achieve 80 points or more are eligible to apply in a remarkable 1 year.
Other Eligibility Pathways:
Marriage: Individuals married to a Japanese national or permanent resident for at least three years, with one year of continuous residence in Japan.
Long-Term Resident Children: Children of Japanese nationals or permanent residents after one year of continuous residence.
All applicants, regardless of the route, must reflect financial stability, a clean criminal record and a history of fulfilling tax and social security payment obligations.
Application Process
The application process is straightforward but demands meticulous attention to documentation. Key required documents include:
Securing PR in Japan comes with significant advantages, including freedom from visa renewals, unrestricted employment rights, and improved access to financial services like loans and mortgages.
However, new permanent residents should be mindful of ongoing obligations. To maintain PR status, you must physically reside in Japan for more than six months each year. Furthermore, Japan has strict tax laws and after a certain period of residence, individuals may be required to declare their worldwide income.
