A video of Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma behind the wheel of a new Tesla Model Y has gone viral across social media, drawing reactions from users and even a nod from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The clip, shared on X, shows Sharma buckling his seat belt and steering the newly delivered electric car out for a drive. The caption on the post read, “This is why Tesla doesn’t need to advertise – Rohit Sharma (captain of India’s national cricket team), who has 45 million followers on Instagram, just bought a new Tesla Model Y.”
Viewers quickly noticed the car’s registration number, MH01FB3015, visible during the recording. Some online users speculated that the number sequence might reference the cricketer’s children. Sharma and his wife Ritika Sajdeh welcomed their daughter Samaira on December 30, 2018 and their son Ahaan on November 15, 2024.
Although Musk did not comment directly, he reposted the user’s video from his official X account.

Reactions to the footage poured in from fans and electric-vehicle enthusiasts alike. One comment read, “Good products like Tesla need not advertise, but word of mouth can spread like wildfire.” Another person wrote, “When you make a great product, it sells itself. Tesla has one of the highest satisfaction ratings and repeat customers among automakers.”
Others viewed the moment as a marketing coup. “You can’t get better exposure than that!” one user observed, while another added, “Wild move by Rohit! When a cricket legend picks Tesla, you know the game is changing. That sleek Model Y looks like it belongs in a winning team. Anyone else tempted to switch to electric now?”
The video’s timing also coincided with Tesla’s formal entry into the Indian market. The American electric-vehicle manufacturer recently opened its first showrooms in Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Aerocity in New Delhi, signalling a long-anticipated expansion into India’s growing EV sector.
