Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel smashed the fastest T20 century by an Indian in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Wednesday. Patel achieved the feat during the clash between Gujarat and Tripura in Indore, which the former won by eight wickets. Batting at a staggering strike-rate of 322.86, Urvil returned unbeaten on 113 off 35 deliveries, a knock laced with seven 4s and twelve 6s. Patel's effort helped Gujarat wrap the 156-run chase in 10.2 overs.
The ton by Patel comes exactly a year after he smashed the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List-A cricket. Meanwhile, his effort also saw him zoom past Rishabh Pant's record for the fastest T20 hundred by an Indian. Pant had scored a 32-ball century against Himachal Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy back in 2018.
Meanwhile, Urvil's ton is also the second-fastest in T20 format, only behind Estonia's Sahil Chauhan, whose hundred against Cyprus came in 27 balls.
Unsold at IPL auction
Patel had failed to attract bidders in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction held earlier this week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Exactly on this day last year, which was a day after being released by Gujarat Titans, Urvil scored an unbeaten 41-ball 100 for Gujarat in their Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh in Chandigarh. This was the second-fastest by an Indian batter in List A cricket, behind Yusuf Pathan, who tops the chart with 40-ball ton.
He was released by the franchise without any games. Patel's name was in the uncapped wicketkeepers list in the 2025 mega auction, but did not come up in the auction.
