Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction had some exciting prodigies signing up for different franchises. One that caught the limelight of everyone is the story of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 13-year-old who bagged a mammoth contract worth Rs 1.10 crore from the Rajasthan Royals.

During the second and final day of the IPL mega auction, Vaibhav who's 13 years and eight months old, became the youngest cricketer to be picked by any IPL team. His father Sanjiv Suryavanshi who sold his farmland three years ago to fund his son's dream of becoming a cricketer was lost for words after RR bought the wonderkid. He also revealed the financial struggles the family has been facing.

"Woh ab sirf humra bituwa nahi pura Bihar ka bituwa hai (He is not just my son now but entire Bihar's son)," Sanjiv told PTI over phone as his son is currently in Dubai for the U-19 Asia Cup.

"My son has worked hard. At the age of 8 years, he excelled at U-16 district trials. I would take him for his cricket coaching to Samastipur and then take him back," he recalled the days of hardships.

"It's a big investment. Aapko kya bataye humne toh apna zameen tak bech diya. Abhi bhi halat pura sudhra nahi (I have sold my land. Financial issues are still there)," he added.

His father also revealed the story behind the bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals for the young talent.

"Rajasthan Royals had called him for trials in Nagpur. Vikram Rathour sir (batting coach) gave a match situation where he had to score 17 in an over. Bituwa ne 3 chakka mara. Trials mein aat chakka aur char chauwaa mara (He smashed three sixes. At trials, he hit eight sixes and four fours)," the father claimed proudly.

Starting with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, Delhi Capitals (DC) made the opening bid, but RR ultimately secured him after a brief bidding war for Rs 1.1 crore.

Suryavanshi has been making waves in the cricketing world with his remarkable achievements at a young age. Recently, he grabbed headlines by becoming the youngest batter to score an international century, smashing 104 off just 62 balls in a Youth Test for India Under-19 against Australia U-19 in Chennai.

In the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the prodigious talent made his T20 debut for Bihar against Rajasthan, where he scored a quick 13 off six balls before being dismissed by Deepak Chahar. However, his rapid rise has not been without controversy, as questions surrounding his age have occasionally surfaced.
