Pakistan's Mohammad Amir picks IPL 2026 over PSL: ‘I will definitely play’

Following the 2008 IPL's first season, in which 12 Pakistani players participated, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the decision to bar Pakistani players from the richest franchise league in the world following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai later that year.

Former Pakistani bowler Mohammad Amir has once again stated his ambition to play in India's premier T20 tournament, saying that he will play in the Indian Premier tournament if given the chance and the Pakistan Super League otherwise. In the ongoing PSL 2025, Amir is playing for the Quetta Gladiators.

When asked if there will be a scheduling problem between the Pakistan Super League and the IPL in an interview with Geo News, Amir gave a direct response.

“Honestly, if I get the opportunity, I’ll play in the IPL. I’m saying this openly. But if I don’t get a chance, then I will play in the PSL. By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL and if given the chance, then why not?" Amir said.

“I don’t think IPL and PSL will clash next year. Because this year, the ICC Champions Trophy was everything. If I get picked in PSL first, then I can’t pull off, as I will be banned from the tournament," Amir added.

Amir has taken four wickets in three PSL games, but his economy rate of 9.73 has made him a little expensive.

Since then, a number of Pakistani cricket players have indicated an interest in participating in the IPL. But because of the political distance between the two nations, Pakistani players are not permitted to play in the IPL and since 2012, India and Pakistan have not participated in any bilateral series.

Even though they were prohibited from playing in the IPL, former Pakistani cricket stars participated in the competition. The legendary Wasim Akram was named bowling coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009 and Ramiz Raja, a former Pakistani cricket player, served as a commentator until the 2014 edition of the IPL.
