South Africa explosive wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday. Klaasen announced his decision on Instagram by releasing a statement, which read: “It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket.”
“It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future,” he added. Klaasen said the motive behind this sudden move was to get more time to spend with family.
Klaasen had already announced retirement from Tests in January last year with an objective to focus on limited overs cricket. The 32-year-old has played 60 ODIs, 58 T20Is and four Tests. His final appearance for South Africa came in March this year, during the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal against New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Klaasen was last seen in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but didn't have the outing he would have hoped for. However, he did finish the season with a bang, smashing third-joint fastest century in the history of the competition. Batting at a strike-rate of 269.23, Klaasen scored an unbeaten on 105 off 39 balls, which featured seven boundaries and nine maximums.
"The franchise spent a lot of time and money to play this brand of cricket, and it was up to us to step up to the mantle," he had said.
Earlier in the day, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell had announced his decision to quit ODI format.
