Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a political activist, was shot dead in the Utah Valley on Wednesday. Kirk, on his American return tour, was shot while hosting a college event. A search for the shooter is currently underway as US President Donald Trump called the gruesome incident "a dark moment for America."

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis also voiced his thoughts and questioned the legality of gun ownership for Americans. “RIP Charlie Kirk. I’ll never understand America and why everyone can just have a gun,” Du Plessis wrote on X.

Du Plessis is a renowned personality and has represented the Proteas in all three formats. He amassed 4163 runs at an average of 40.03 in 69 Tests, which includes 10 hundreds and 21 half-centuries. He accumulated 1528 runs from 50 T20Is, in which he has one hundred and ten half-centuries. He tallied 5507 runs at an average of 46.67 in 143 ODIs, which includes 12 hundreds and 35 half-centuries.

The United States Senate had previously passed a landmark gun safety bill in June 2022, with an objective to curb rising gun violence. The move came just hours after the US Supreme Court had ruled that Americans hold a constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defence.

Under current federal law, licensed dealers can sell handguns only to individuals aged 21 or older, while long guns such as rifles can be sold to those 18 and above, according to Everytown for Gun Safety - a movement to end gun violence. Private sellers, however, are allowed to sell handguns to 18-year-olds, and there is no minimum age requirement for purchasing long guns.

Trump during his campaign had told an NRA event that he would deal with such legislation if he were re-elected. “No one will lay a finger on your firearms,” he was quoted as saying by news agency Associated Press.

Reflecting his thoughts on Kirk's death, Trump brought up the assassination attempt on him last year and the 2024 murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. “Radical left political violence has hurt too many innocent people,” said Trump.
