They say, ‘health is wealth’ for a reason. With ageing, it becomes even more important to take care of yourself as lifestyle starts to impact your health. To stay free from long-term health problems, a more conscious approach needs to be followed, which includes incorporating healthy habits into your routine. This is more specifically for people in their forties who begin to see signs of ageing.
Dr Jeremy E. London, a cardiovascular surgeon, also shared some useful advice on his Instagram for people over 40 to enjoy a long, healthy life. The top two on his list, he said, were recommendations for all age groups.

Here’s what he suggested…
- Alcohol: As you age, the body’s reaction to the same amount of alcohol changes, becoming stronger than before. “If you really want to set the stage for yourself long term, limit or remove alcohol. It’s toxic to every cell in your body. This can be hard because alcohol is everywhere. It’s a personal choice, just be thoughtful,” Dr Jeremy said.

- Smoking and vaping: While smoking involves inhaling smoke from burning tobacco, vaping uses a handheld electronic device to heat an e-liquid into an aerosol (vapour) containing nicotine, flavourings, and other chemicals. Even though vaping is touted to be safer, it is not and has been linked to health problems. The cardiologist added, “It is bad for you and increases your risk of lung cancer, heart attack, and stroke. Don’t vape, don’t smoke.”
- Sleep: A good night’s sleep is important for the body to function at its optimum. It improves your brain performance, mood, and health, helping you stay healthy and alert. It is not only important to get enough sleep but also uninterrupted and refreshing sleep. Even a consistent sleeping schedule matters.

- Avoid toxic people: As you get older, you do not want to spend time with people who drain your energy and make you feel low, unconfident, and demoralised. “Focus and nurture your relationships with the people that you care about and love because in the end, that’s what truly matters,” the cardiologist stressed.
