NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, stationed at the International Space Station (ISS) since June, celebrated Christmas with festive cheer. Donning Santa hats, the duo joined their colleagues for a holiday celebration, a gesture that quickly fuelled social media speculation.

In a video shared by NASA, Williams wore a red t-shirt, while three astronauts sported the Santa hats. The sight left many questioning the foresight of packing decorations for what was initially an eight-day mission.

“You brought Christmas decorations into space months ago?” queried one user. Another remarked, “Seriously? How did they know to pack Christmas items?” The queries extended to logistics, with one user asking, “Who delivered the hats and decorations?”

ISS mission extended due to spacecraft malfunction
Williams and Wilmore’s eight-day mission was extended after a Starliner spacecraft malfunction. Originally scheduled to return in February, their return has now been pushed to March.

Addressing conspiracy theories, NASA clarified that Christmas items were delivered in November as part of a SpaceX supply mission, the New York Times reported. The three-ton package included festive meals, decorations, and scientific equipment. Ham, turkey, vegetables, and pies were among the Christmas treats sent to the crew.

Astronauts share holiday cheer from space
NASA also released a video featuring Williams discussing their holiday plans. She highlighted the joy of spending the holidays with her space “family” and spoke about the anticipation and preparations she cherishes during Christmas.

“There are seven of us here, and we’ll enjoy each other’s company,” Williams said. “The preparation and togetherness make Christmas truly special.”

The International Space Station receives supply deliveries multiple times a year, ensuring astronauts have essential items and, occasionally, holiday surprises.
