It is easy to miss what sits in plain sight. A recent YouTube Short by @Forevergreenapp has left viewers amazed. The clip shows a potoo bird camouflaged so well it takes a moment to notice.

What makes the potoo bird hard to spot?
Native to tropical parts of the Americas, the potoo bird is a master of disguise. It is found in southern Mexico, Central America and South America. The bird relies on mottled grey and brown feathers to resemble tree branches. When it tilts its head upward, it appears like the broken end of wood. Its stillness completes the illusion, often tricking both humans and predators.

How do chicks use this camouflage?
Camouflage is vital from the very start of life. Potoo chicks instinctively mimic their parents’ behaviour soon after hatching. They stay still and blend into tree bark with ease. Unlike other species, potoos do not build nests. Instead, they lay a single egg on a stump or branch. The chick remains in that exposed spot, yet is shielded through its camouflage. This method allows young birds to avoid predators effectively.

The disguise works most effectively during daylight hours. Potoos are active at night, resting during the day and hunting at night. Their camouflage allows them to go undetected while resting. The birds also possess small slits in their eyelids. This enables them to observe their environment without flinching. By blending in seamlessly, they provide for safety ahead of time before feeding time comes with darkness.
